you are holding up a ceiling with both arms.

it is very heavy, but you must hold it up or else it will fall down on you. your arms are tired, terribly tired, and as the day goes on, it feels as if either your arms or the ceiling will soon collapse. but then, unexpectedly, something wonderful happens: someone, a man or a woman, walks into the room and holds their arms up to the ceiling beside you, so finally you get to take down your arms. you feel the relief of respite, the blood flowing back to your fingers and arms, and when your partner’s arms tire, you hold up your own to relieve him again. and it can go on like this for many years without the house falling.

“Compassion hurts. When you feel connected to everything, you also feel responsible for everything. And you cannot turn away. Your destiny is bound with the destinies of others. You must either learn to carry the Universe or be crushed by it. You must grow strong enough to love the world, yet empty enough to sit down at the same table with its worst horrors.”

When you go out into the woods and you look at trees, you see all these different trees. And some of them are bent, and some of them are straight, and some of them are evergreens, and some of them are whatever. And you look at the tree and you allow it. You appreciate it. You see why it is the way it is. You sort of understand that it didn’t get enough light, and so it turned that way. And you don’t get all emotional about it. You just allow it. You appreciate the tree. The minute you get near humans, you lose all that. And you are constantly saying ‘You’re too this, or I’m too this.’ That judging mind comes in. And so I practice turning people into trees. Which means appreciating them just the way they are.

Reusable Buildings in Marrakech

A series of temporary structures have been erected at the COP22 climate conference in Marrakech, Morocco. the designs seek to respond to the country’s architecture and unique climate through the reinterpretation of traditional construction techniques. In keeping with the event’s message of sustainability, the buildings will be reused after the summit and distributed to local associations. COP22’s exhibition spaces have been designed by Paris and Casablanca-based architects Oualalou + Choi, who worked in collaboration with French architect Stéphane Malka on the project’s scenography.
